Obituary for Barbara Ann Slivan (Roggan)

SLIVAN - Barbara Ann (nee Roggan) age 78, May 4, 2020, of North Tonawanda, beloved wife of the late Stephen J Slivan; dear mother of Stephen M. Slivan, Thomas Slivan, Joseph Slivan and Susan Slivan. Born in Buffalo to the late Francis and Ethel (Arnold) Roggan, Barbara was salutatorian of Riverside High School’s class of 1959 and attended Bethany College. She earned B.A. cum laude and M.Ed. Degrees at the University at Buffalo.
She taught math at the former Calasanctius School, Amherst Central High School, and UB. Among her many accomplishments, she was named “Teacher of the Year” and received the “Extra Mile Award” for her teaching contributions, which included grading AP Calculus exams, advancing technology in mathematics classrooms, and winning coach of Niagara Frontier Mathematics League teams. Barbara chaperoned ski club, sang with the madrigal singers, and taught after-school aerobics classes. As a lover of the outdoors, she passionately explored New Mexico, enjoyed hiking, and was an avid runner, receiving honors such as Buffalo News Runner of the Year 2002, and Amherst HS Athlete of the Week. She meticulously maintained and shared her gardens, loved her cats, and always helped others enhance their lives. Barbara lived life to the fullest, had a positive outlook, and found humor in each and every aspect of her life. She will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. As a cancer survivor and lover of animals memorial contributions may be made to Roswell Park or the SPCA.
